1-on-1 Tutoring

For thirty years, our 1-on-1 tutoring has helped learners achieve personal goals, gain confidence, and improve their reading and writing levels. Each learner is paired with a tutor for long-term, personalized help. All our tutoring is free and confidential. Whether our learners are preparing to apply for citizenship, applying for jobs, or just increasing their reading level for pleasure, their tutors work with them for one hour a week to develop their skills and to help them accomplish their goals.

We offer two types of 1-on-1 tutoring.

Basic Literacy Tutoring helps native English speakers raise their reading levels. They may be working towards getting their GED or applying for jobs, helping their children with homework, or learning to read for pleasure. Many of our learners have had trouble succeeding in a traditional school environment, or have not been able to complete their education due to special circumstances. With 1-on-1 tutoring, our learners are able to develop their skills at their own pace and receive instruction that is tailored to their needs, goals, and learning styles. This tutoring is about more than just learning to read. As our learners increase their reading level and develop life skills, they become more empowered and confident.

English as a Second Language (ESL) Tutoring helps international learners improve their conversational and written English. They may be working towards applying for citizenship, helping their families, or simply becoming more comfortable in the United States. Many of our ESL learners have come to West Virginia to work or attend school or are relocating with family members. Though most of our ESL learners are literate in their native language, some are learning to read and write for the first time. Our tutors work with our learners on English grammar and syntax, as well as slang, cultural context, and pronunciation.
