About Us

LVMPC is celebrating its 30th year of providing free, confidential, and innovative services to adults in Monongalia and Preston Counties. Over 15,000 adults in the two counties cannot read above a 4th grade reading level. We provide 1-on-1 tutoring and classes in GED prep, basic computing skills, and citizenship prep. We also host an English Conversation Table in Morgantown and run the Ruby Read Mobile Library in Preston County.

We are affiliated with ProLiteracy, an international literacy group, and LiteracyWV. We are the second largest affiliate in the state and also one of the oldest. In the beginning, LVMPC was little more than a group of volunteers working out of kitchens and living rooms. Although funding for adult literacy programs has been slashed in recent years, we have continued to grow due to the tireless efforts of our volunteers, the generosity of our donors and grantmakers, and the strength of our tight-knit community. In addition to providing services within Monongalia and Preston Counties, we work with other literacy organizations in West Virginia, collaborating and sharing resources, tutor trainings, and referrals.

Our curriculum is designed to be accessible and portable. Whether tucked away in rural mountain communities or right downtown, tutors and learners work together when and where they can, ensuring that learning can still happen despite work or family commitments. Our motto is Each 1, Teach 1--the belief that we can eliminate illiteracy by teaching people how to pass on their own knowledge, creating a ripple effect of learning and literacy.
