Classes & Workshops

In addition to our 1-on-1 tutoring, we offer many classes and workshops for specific skills. All workshops and materials are free to participants.

GED Prep Course
Our GED prep courses prepare participants to successfully and comfortably attain their GED. Instructors help participants identify what skills they already have and what sections they need to concentrate on. Each learner completes a diagnostic assessment to determine what their existing knowledge is. From there, participants work through self-paced workbooks and work individually with the tutors as needed. Small class sizes and a self-paced structure ensure that each participant masters the skills they need to get their GED.

Citizenship Prep Course
This 6 week course walks participants through the steps to becoming a U.S. Citizenship class. The classes include basic U.S. History, filling the N-400, and legislative information about West Virginia. Participants are given the chance to practice for the interview. These mock interviews help participants feel confident and comfortable answering questions and representing themselves. We provide all the resources and support needed for participants to understand the citizenship process and successfully become a U.S. citizen. If you or someone you know is interested in participating this class, please contact us to enroll.

Basic Computing Skills Class
This course introduces participants to computing basics such as the parts of a computer, how to access the internet, word processing basics, and how to use e-mail and Facebook. For learners who have not had experience with computers, entering the world of technology can be overwhelming. With 1 instructor for every 4 participants, these classes provide a supportive opportunity for participants to become comfortable with computers at their own pace. Participants are able to ask questions and get hands-on experience using computers and navigating the internet. Our computing classes are held in our BB&T Lighthouse Literacy Center, in the basement of the library, which has eight internet-connected computers as well as other learning resources.

Family & Financial Literacy Workshop
Our portable family and financial literacy workshops provide communities with information and valuable resources on a variety of specific skills. Our family literacy workshops help parents understand learning styles and how to help their children succeed in school. Our financial literacy workshops demystify banking and saving strategies to empower participants to manage their finances comfortably. If you are interested in bringing a workshop to your community, please contact us for more information.
