Make an impact on your community by volunteering with LVMPC. We have many volunteer opportunities available, whether you are looking for a long-term tutoring experience or just want to help out with one of our events. Last year, our tutors and volunteers provided over 4,500 hours of instructional time in the form of computing classes, 1-on-1 tutoring, GED or citizenship prep courses, our conversation table, and our many other services. Our volunteers provide our learners with valuable life skills that do more than just raise a learner's reading level. Our volunteers help to give our learners self-confidence, pride, and a sense of accomplishment.

Be A Tutor

To become a tutor, contact us and we will set up a time for an intake interview. During the interview, we will meet you and talk about your background, skill set, and what you are looking to gain from volunteering with LVMPC. No previous tutoring experience is necessary. We provide all training, curriculum, and materials needed to be a tutor, and you will become a ProLiteracy certified tutor. After the interview, you will then be paired with a learner and begin to meet with them for one hour each week to help them achieve their learning goals. Before you begin working with your learner, you will have a chance to meet with them to understand their goals and existing knowledge. We will introduce you to the curriculum you will be using and answer any questions you may have. Contact us to set up a time to get started.

Lead A Program

In addition to our 1-on-1 tutoring, we offer many classes and programs, such as GED prep, citizenship prep, and basic computing. We have a very high demand for all of these courses, and are always looking for potential tutors to lead more sessions. If you have a specific skill or area of interest, we would love to help you craft a program or service for our learners. Whether you'd like to lead a one time workshop or create an ongoing program, we can provide all the materials and connections you need. If you are interested in becoming involved with an existing program, or creating a new one, please contact us to find out more information.

Help At An Event

We have many events which we host each year to promote literacy in the area and to raise funds for LVMPC. Some of these include our Scrabble Tournament (February), our Wrestling Tournament (April), and our Golf Tournament (July), in addition to many other awareness events throughout the year. Volunteering at these events is a great way to stay involved with the LVMPC community and provide us with invaluable support. Contact us for more information about individual event volunteer opportunities.
